Starting with the original content, May 14 will see the debut of the new series, The Underground Railroad. The series is an adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s novel of the same name, which came out in 2016, and was out of the gate already being developed for a television series. In 2017, it was revealed that Barry Jenkins (Moonlight, Dear White People) would direct all 11 episodes of the limited series, in which the Underground Railroad is “no mere metaphor: engineers and conductors operate a secret network of actual tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil… The Underground Railroad is both the gripping tale of one woman’s will to escape the horrors of bondage–and a powerful meditation on the history we all share.” Jenkins’s Dear White People, a satirical dramedy about escalating racial tensions at a fictional Ivy League college from the perspective of several Black students, also hits Prime Video on May 1.
